Daily Itinerary

Day

1

Auckland - Arrival

Upon arrival in Auckland, you will be met and transferred to your hotel.

Day

2

Auckland - Waitomo Caves - Rotorua

Travel south past the rolling green hills and pastureland to the Waitomo Caves region. Beneath the surface of this ancient limestone region lays a labyrinth of caves and underground rivers. Your local guide will provide historical and geographical commentary before you drift silently in a boat under the milky way of millions of glowworms on the cavern roof above you. Continue through farmland, lakeland and forest until the distinctive smell of sulphur and constant steam drifts let you know you are in tempestuous, geothermal Rotorua. (B)

Day

3

Discover Rotorua

Experience Maori culture at Te Puia and take a tour through a thermal valley full of forceful geysers and bubbling mud pools. View woodcarving and weaving schools and see how these ancient arts are being passed on to a new generation. Explore Rainbow Springs Kiwi Wildlife Park, where you can get up close to the native flora and fauna of New Zealand. Next, see the agricultural industry in action at the Agrodome, a working farm where you can view a sheep shearing display and sheep dog trials. This evening, enjoy a memorable night of culture, song and dance followed by dinner cooked the traditional Maori way, on hot stones underground. (B,D)

Day

4

Rotorua - Taupo - Napier

Travel south via Lake Taupo with the three volcanic mountains of Ruapehu, Ngauruhoe and Tongariro dominating the scenery. Enjoy the landscape as the road changes from forest to rugged mountain ranges and then fertile vineyards as you continue on to the Hawke’s Bay, known for its gourmet food and world-class wineries. (B)

Day

5

Explore Napier

Today you will enjoy a full day at your leisure to explore historic Napier, devastated by an earthquake in 1931. Napier is now considered to be the Art Deco capital of the world. We recommend taking a short excursion to the nearby Cape Kidnappers, home to an easily accessible colony of gannet. (B)

Day

6

Napier - Wellington

Spend the day relaxing on your scenic drive from Napier to Wellington, the southern capital of New Zealand. Upon arrival, check-in to your hotel and enjoy the remainder of the evening at your leisure. (B)

Day

7

Explore Wellington

Wellington is a compact and cultured city full of character, nestled between the harbor and the hills. Spend a day at your leisure exploring the downtown area, perfect for wandering on foot. Wellington is noted for its live theater, art galleries, restaurants and cultural activities. On the waterfront is Te Papa Tongarewa, New Zealand’s national museum and one of the best interactive museums in the world. We recommend an optional visit while you enjoy the city. (B)

Day

8

Wellington - Return

Enjoy a final New Zealand breakfast before transferring to the airport for your return flight home. Alternatively, you may wish to take a ferry to the South Island to prolong your stay. (B)
